Governor Wenge’s Death Marks a Sad Moment Ahead of PNG’s Jubilee Celebrations
Papua New Guinea has lost a prominent political and legal figure with the death of Morobe Governor Luther Akisawa Wenge early this morning, Prime Minister James Marape confirmed.
Governor Wenge passed away at Port Moresby General Hospital following surgery to stop internal bleeding. Despite intensive care and preparations for further treatment, his underlying diabetic condition resulted in complications that led to his death. Doctors confirmed he did not recover around 4 a.m., and life support was removed after family consent.

Prime Minister Marape extended heartfelt condolences to Governor Wenge’s family, the people of Morobe, and all Papua New Guineans mourning the loss. He commended the medical staff and the Leader of Government Business for their efforts during the emergency care.
Deputy Prime Minister John Rosso described the Governor’s death as a tragic shock to the nation and the people of Morobe, particularly on the eve of the country’s 50th Independence celebrations. He highlighted Mr. Wenge’s long-standing service, including three terms from 1997 to 2012 and his current tenure since 2022, noting his dedication to justice, development, and the well-being of his province.
Governor Wenge was widely respected as a strong, principled leader and a seasoned lawyer whose bold parliamentary voice protected the rights of his constituents. Mr. Rosso praised him as a “true Morobean son” whose contributions to national and provincial development will be remembered.
He also conveyed sympathies to the Wenge family, relatives, and the communities of Samangzing and Nawae during this period of grief.
Prime Minister Marape said that funeral arrangements and the repatriation program will soon be finalized, while reflecting on the Governor’s unwavering support for the Pangu Pati and his significant role in national politics.
