PNG must build a stronger pool of internationally experienced players and arrange more matches against quality opposition if the Kumuls are to improve their standing ahead of the next Rugby League World Cup, coach Jason Demetriou says.
The warning comes after Papua New Guinea suffered a 64-6 loss to Samoa Toa in Port Moresby on Saturday, leaving the national side with important lessons to address as it looks towards future international campaigns.

Demetriou said the country needed to focus on developing players capable of performing consistently in demanding professional competitions, particularly the NRL and England’s Super League.
He said players who regularly compete at that level gain valuable knowledge of game management, defensive systems, tactical decisions and the interpretation of rules.
The coach also identified the video bunker, penalty opportunities and interchange management as areas where greater experience could help the Kumuls make better decisions during matches.
"That definitely plays a part," Demetriou said, stressing the need for players to understand how the bunker could be used to their advantage.
He said the team’s future progress would depend on several factors, including better player development, more international exposure and ensuring key players were available for national duties.
Demetriou also called for more lead-up matches against international opposition, explaining that regular competition would allow the squad to build combinations and develop confidence before facing the strongest teams.
He said the PNGRFL and the Kumuls needed to take a more deliberate approach to planning for the next World Cup, with the aim of increasing the number of Papua New Guinean players competing in elite professional leagues.
The coach’s message was clear: improving the Kumuls would require sustained investment in player development and preparation, rather than relying on short-term efforts before major tournaments.
