Akon Touches Down for PNG’s Golden Jubilee Celebration
Papua New Guinea rolled out the red carpet on Monday for international superstar Akon, who arrived at Jacksons International Airport to headline the country’s 50th Independence Anniversary festivities. The Senegalese-American hitmaker will perform at the Golden Jubilee Independence Concert set for Wednesday, 17 September 2025, at Sir John Guise Stadium in Port Moresby.

Government officials confirmed that K5 million was allocated to secure Akon’s appearance at the milestone celebration. Excited fans turned up at the airport to welcome the multi-award-winning artist, whose blend of hip-hop, R&B, and African rhythms has captivated audiences around the world.
Akon catapulted to fame with his 2004 album Trouble and is known for global hits such as Locked Up, Smack That, and Don’t Matter. Over the years, he has collaborated with music legends including Michael Jackson, Eminem, and David Guetta.
Apart from his music career, Akon is recognized for his entrepreneurial and humanitarian initiatives, notably his Akon Lighting Africa project, which provides solar energy to African communities.
The Golden Jubilee Independence Concert is expected to be a highlight of Papua New Guinea’s week-long celebrations as the nation commemorates five decades of sovereignty.
