SP PNG Hunters Keep Season Alive with Commanding Round 23 Victory
Papua New Guinea’s SP PNG Hunters produced a stunning performance in the Hostplus Cup, running away 40-10 winners over Northern Pride at Barlow Park, Cairns, on Saturday. The result keeps the Hunters’ finals hopes alive as they edge closer to the end of the regular season.
The Hunters struck first through Judah Rimbu, who dived over in the 12th minute. Solo Wane and Ila Alu followed up with tries in quick succession to extend the lead. Despite a reply from Pride’s Laitia Moceidreke in the 29th minute, the visitors responded through Robert Mathias, taking a 22-4 lead into halftime.
The second half belonged entirely to the Hunters, with livewire halfback Sanny Wabo stealing the show. He crossed for three tries in the space of 22 minutes, punishing the Pride defense with his sharp footwork and vision. His hat-trick ensured the Hunters stayed firmly in control.
Kicking accuracy proved vital, with Jamie Mavoko converting four goals and teammates Gairo Voro and Clent Lama adding one each. The Pride struggled in this department, managing just one successful kick from Seamus King-Smith late in the contest.
Pride’s only other highlight came in the 71st minute when Dane Aukafolau crashed through for their second try. However, it was far too late to spark any comeback as the Hunters continued to dominate field position and possession.
The win was built on strong forward momentum, quick play-the-balls, and slick backline execution. Hunters’ defense also stood firm, shutting down Pride’s attacking chances and forcing errors throughout the game.
Saturday’s result lifts the Hunters’ confidence as they push for a finals berth. With their attacking strike power and defensive resilience, they remain a dangerous side in the Hostplus Cup’s closing rounds.
