Commemorative K50 Note and 50 Toea Coin Enter Circulation in PNG

Papua New Guinea’s golden jubilee celebrations have been marked with the release of a redesigned K50 note and 50 toea coin. The new currency, launched by the Bank of Papua New Guinea, has now entered circulation nationwide.

The Central Bank stated that two million K50 notes and 2.5 million coins were produced for the 50th Independence Anniversary. The designs highlight the nation’s heritage while symbolising unity and progress.

The K50 note maintains its iconic Parliament House and continues to honour the late Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare. Added to the note is a striking golden 50th anniversary emblem with the Raggiana bird of paradise, representing the nation’s forward journey.

The 50 toea coin, recognised for its seven-sided shape, now carries the national crest along with a coloured inlay of the PNG flag, signifying strength in diversity.

BPNG Governor Elizabeth Genia said the commemorative release tells the story of Papua New Guinea’s development since independence. She confirmed that the Bank will issue a new K100 note in 2026 honouring Sir Julius Chan.
