Governor Allan Bird Takes Helm of PNG’s People’s Reform Party
East Sepik Governor Allan Bird has assumed leadership of the People’s Reform Party (PRP) following a formal announcement in Port Moresby on Sunday.
PRP founder James Donald, the North Fly MP, confirmed that the party’s executive committee had unanimously endorsed Bird as its new leader. “This is about dropping egos and focusing on the bigger picture,” Donald said, highlighting the decision as one made for national interest.

Bird, who has served as an independent since leaving his previous affiliation, revealed he had contemplated retiring from politics. However, calls from constituents and the wider public convinced him to continue. He said five political parties approached him, but only PRP met his criteria for reform, clean politics, and youthful leadership.
“PRP has no baggage and no history of bad decisions. They stand for reforms, and that’s what our country needs,” Bird stated.
Founded in 2018, PRP entered parliament in 2022 and has built its identity on principles of courage, honesty, and reform. Its red, black, and white emblem symbolizes these values. Donald said handing leadership to Bird reflected the party’s commitment to unity.
In his first speech as leader, Bird warned that Papua New Guinea faced deep problems of corruption, lawlessness, and lost opportunities for young people. He likened the nation to a “sick patient” requiring bitter but necessary medicine.
Analysts suggest Bird’s new role could give PRP a stronger platform heading into the 2027 elections, positioning it as an alternative to the established political order.
