China's Guangong leader welcomed to Papua New Guinea
The Prime Minister, Hon. Peter O’Neill CMG MP, has welcomed H.E. Li Xi, the Secretary of the Communist Party in Guangdong Province in China to Papua New Guinea.
In receiving the highest-ranking leader from Guangdong, a province of 110 million people and a Gross Domestic Product of US$1.3 trillion, the Prime Minister highlighted the importance of building stronger links with provinces in China.
“Sub-national engagement with provinces in China is important for building more business and investment in Papua New Guinea,” the Prime Minister said.
“Guangdong is a massive province and an economic powerhouse in China that offers great potential for our businesses and for direct investment.
“We welcome investors from Guangdong to explore opportunities in many sectors including resources and the export of agricultural products to China.
“We encourage visits and exchanges between our business communities.
“I would also like to see more tertiary education exchanges with Guangdong Province.
“As we continue to open our economies to the more trade and people-to-people contact, there is a lot to be gained.”
PM O’Neill welcomed Mr Li to Papua New Guinea, an invitation he had extended when they met in Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong, during the Prime Minister’s Official Visit to China in June.
“It is our pleasure to receive Mr Li in Papua New Guinea that is laying strong foundations ahead of the State Visit by Xi Jinping, in November ahead of APEC.
“During President Xi’s State Visit, we hope to conclude agreements that were formalised during my Official Visit to China in June.
“This includes an agreement for a national feasibility study on the proposed bilateral Free Trade Agreement, the establishment of a Joint Economic and Trade Commission, and further discussions on an MoU for the One Road, One Belt Initiative.
“Papua New Guinea is very satisfied with the current state of relations with China that is growing and diversifying.
“Our countries work closely together for the good of both our peoples.
“Papua New Guinea recognises a very strict One-China Policy, and this will not change.
“We further appreciate China’s commitment to provide support for APEC in 2018, that includes the provision of buses and fire engines, and road construction projects.”
“I thank business leaders from Guangdong Province who are part of this visit and hope they identify strong opportunity for investment.”
