PNG Opposition Demands Justice For Slain Kundiawa Doctor

PNG Opposition Leader James Nomane has called for full legal action against those responsible for the death of Kundiawa doctor Robert Waiye, saying the killing has robbed Simbu and the nation of a promising young medical professional.

Dr Waiye was killed during the early hours of Independence Day in Kundiawa while serving at Sir Joseph Nombri Memorial Kundiawa Provincial Hospital, prompting renewed calls for greater protection of health workers.

The 26-year-old doctor was originally from Gera village in Tabare LLG, Sinasina-Yongomugl, and had built a strong academic and professional record before returning to Simbu.

He attended Yawe Moses Secondary School and went on to graduate at the top of his class from the UPNG School of Medicine.

His medical career also included a role on the team that successfully separated Papua New Guinea’s first conjoined twins.

Dr Waiye later undertook residency training in Tari, where the Hela Provincial Health Authority wanted him to remain.

Instead, he returned to his home province and joined the medical workforce at Kundiawa.

Mr Nomane said his decision to serve in Simbu demonstrated his commitment to his community and made his death an especially painful loss.

He said the province, which has a very limited doctor-to-population ratio, could ill afford to lose a young doctor with his experience and potential.

Six people have been arrested over the killing, and Mr Nomane has urged police to continue with a thorough investigation and ensure the matter proceeds through the courts.

He also called for measures to make hospitals and other workplaces safer for medical staff.

Mr Nomane extended his condolences to Dr Waiye’s immediate family, relatives and colleagues at Kundiawa Hospital.

“Justice for Dr Waiye. Protection for our health workers. Peace for Simbu,” he said.
