Starlink To Strengthen PNG Defence Force Connectivity

Papua New Guinea Defence Force is moving to satellite internet technology in a bid to improve communication for troops serving in remote and strategically important locations across PNG.

Starlink has been brought into the PNGDF's communication network on a trial basis, beginning at Murray Barracks and the Force Support Battalion before consideration is given to extending the service to other military bases.

The introduction of the service comes as the Defence Force looks for ways to maintain dependable communication despite the geographical challenges faced by the country.

PNGDF Chief Rear Admiral Philip Polewara said modern communication technology could assist the organisation in strengthening its ability to coordinate personnel and operations.

The satellite system provides an alternative in locations where traditional telecommunications services may not be readily available.

Lieutenant Colonel Mwawesi said the PNGDF's personnel were spread across the country and required effective links with headquarters.

For Lieutenant Colonel Miro, the ability to receive information in real time was an important part of carrying out military responsibilities.

He said faster communication would assist personnel in receiving orders, reporting information and responding to operational requirements.

“Starlink will improve lot on our effectiveness-on how effectively we carry out our orders, our operations and be able to get information as quickly as possible, and in real time,” Lt Col Miro said.

The PNGDF intends to prioritise front-line personnel as the service is developed, with the longer-term objective of providing Starlink connectivity to more Defence Force bases around the country.
