Cross-code sensation Zac Lomax landed in Port Moresby at midday yesterday, kicking off a closely watched visit to the PNG Chiefs' training base as the club edges closer to landing him for their maiden NRL campaign.

The former Dragons flyer, who has spent the past year chasing a Wallabies jersey with the Western Force, is believed to be sizing up what life at the Chiefs would look like ahead of their 2028 entry into the competition, with the trip seen by many close to the deal as the last box to tick before terms are finalised.

Lomax broke into first grade with St George Illawarra back in 2018 and quickly cemented himself as one of the Red V's most dangerous outside backs, filling in across centre, wing and fullback during a career that stretched past 100 NRL appearances for the joint venture club.

His form on the club stage translated to representative honours, with the Wollongong product handed a NSW Blues jumper for the 2024 State of Origin arena.

Lomax's NRL career took a fresh turn at the start of 2025 when he put pen to paper on a four-year contract with the Parramatta Eels, walking away from the club that developed him.

That stint at the Eels was short-lived, however, after Lomax swapped codes entirely in March 2026, agreeing to a two-year arrangement with the Western Force and Rugby Australia in pursuit of a Wallabies berth and a possible World Cup campaign in 2027.

Now, with the Chiefs circling, the 26-year-old finds himself weighing up a switch back to the 13-man game — one that would place him at the heart of Papua New Guinea's historic entry into the NRL.
