PNG Signs K12.8 Million Deal to Boost Finschhafen Airstrip Infrastructure

A major rural aviation upgrade is set to begin in Papua New Guinea following the awarding of a K12.8 million contract for the redevelopment of the Finschhafen Airstrip.

The National Airports Corporation sealed the deal with China Railway Construction Group Co. Limited in Port Moresby, in a move aimed at strengthening transport links in Morobe Province.

Civil Aviation Minister Wake Goi witnessed the signing alongside Morobe Governor Renbo Paita and senior representatives from the Asian Development Bank and NAC leadership.

According to NAC Acting CEO Dominic Kaumu, the project forms part of the Civil Aviation Development Investment Project II and is one of four rural airstrip upgrades being rolled out.

He said the works will include strengthening the runway, taxiways and apron, applying bituminous sealing to aircraft movement areas, and upgrading the existing terminal and car park facilities.

Mr Kaumu stated that the project will run over an 18-month period and is expected to be completed by late 2027.

He also highlighted that the investment is tied to the government’s Connect PNG policy under the Medium-Term Development Plan, which seeks to improve infrastructure nationwide.

Minister Goi said the development of rural airstrips is just as important as road construction, stressing that many remote communities remain cut off due to lack of access.

He pointed out that while major airports are connected, smaller airstrips have been overlooked, limiting economic and social opportunities for rural populations.

The Minister further called for increased financial support to expand airstrip upgrades across the country and ensure more communities benefit.

“The goal is to build dozens of airstrips rather than just a few, boosting economic activity and mobility in rural areas,” he said.
