Vanuatu General Election date set for 19 March 2020

Vanuatu Electoral Commission has announced that the General Election is scheduled for 19 March, 2020.

Chairman of the Electoral Commission, Martin Tete, confirmed the logistics for the 2020 Parliamentary General Election Arrangements including Polling date was endorsed by Minister of Internal Affairs, Andrew Napuat and Prime Minister, Charlot Salwai.

A communique from the Electoral Commission obtained by Daily Post, conveyed the logistics for next year’s national poll.

Chairman Tete stated the lodging of the Candidature application form starts on the 21 January 2020 and closes on 11 February 2020 — 22 days altogether for that process.

The closing of 2020 Electoral Registration must be six weeks before the polling day.

“The closing of the Electoral Registration is set for 12 February which is six weeks before the polling date,” Tete stated.

He said the declaration of the qualified candidates for parliament general election is scheduled for 02 March 2020.

“It will take a period of 20 days for the screening process between the closing and declaration of candidates,” he stated.

Tete said political campaigns will commence on 02 March 2020 and will close at 12 midnight 16 March 2020. It requires 14 weeks for campaign or two weeks and three clear days before the polling date.

The closing date for lodging of proxy application forms and duplicate electoral cards will close on 04 March.

Vanuatu went to poll on Friday 22 January, 2016 and the life of the 11th legislature will cease on Wednesday 22 January of 2020.

Parliament will go into recess on 20 December 2019. Daily Post understands the Head of State will sign the instrument of dissolution during the recess period.
