Samoa’s Telecommunications Regulator Views Brand-New Kacific1 Satellite at Boeing Factory
Telecommunications regulator Lefaoali'i Unutoa Auelua-Fonoti recently visited the Boeing satellite factory in California, U.S.A. to view the Kacific1 satellite, a next-generation satellite which will stream high-speed low-cost broadband to Samoa from 2020.
The powerful new satellite is owned by private company Kacific Broadband Satellites Group (Kacific) and it is in the final testing stages before it is launched by SpaceX into orbit. Fonoti was involved in discussions on how satellite broadband can bring both economic and social benefit to Samoa.
Availability, affordability and accessibility of telecom services in Samoa is one of our office’s important policy goals. Having Kacific provide more competition and high-speed services to Samoa is part of our role to improve connectivity and the economic development of our country.” said Fonoti.
“Kacific services will complement the submarine cables and the terrestrial services that already exist in Samoa. This new satellite will support global communications, safety and emergency management and will enable us to achieve our objectives in new and innovative ways. For me to view and witness the making of this next generation high speed satellite is a blessing.”
Kacific is currently supplying satellite equipment as well as 12-months of free access to the internet for five schools in Samoa as part of the Pacific Satellite Connectivity Project. The project was signed between International Telecommunications Union and the Samoan Government in 2014 as part of the Small Island Developing States meeting.
Kacific currently operates satellite broadband services across the Pacific through local telecommunications companies, internet service providers and governments. The company focuses on connecting island communities in the Pacific Islands and South East Asia with affordable internet through small satellite dishes.
Kacific has been recognised globally for its work towards better social outcomes through communications technology. Kacific won the Best Digital Inclusion Award 2019 at ICT Days, Vanuatu, and received a Better World Satellite Award in 2018 from the Satellite and Space Professionals International.
