PNG PM Marape call for economic independence

Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape has called on Papua New Guineans to unite to achieve economic independence which is the government’s first and foremost priority.

Marape said since taking office 110 days ago, he had maintained his cabinet’s plans to learn from the past mistakes and improve for a better future.

In his Independence Day message yesterday, he said it coincided with the plans to make PNG economically independent.

Marape also maintained his commitment to be firm and not be bought or sold to corporate and individual greed and to stand resolved for the greater good of PNG.

“We must live in harmony with one and other.

“Do unto others what you want others to do to you, together we can and divided we fall, united we stand, as united tribes of PNG,” Marape said.

“Our nation is endowed with all forms of tropical fisheries and marine resources, all forms of tropical agricultural resources, abundant sunshine and water, mineral and petroleum, talented human resources, we are closer to the Asia-Pacific market, membership of APEC, association with ASEAN, healthy bilateral relationships and good opportunities to harvest all our natural resources.

“Better redistribution to our land owners and provincial governments will ensure we move towards economic independence.”

Marape said his vision of celebrating the country’s 50 years of independence would see changed laws for better harvest of our natural resources.

“I envisage economic independence to liberate our citizens of poor health services, low quality of education, poverty lifestyle, dilapidated infrastructures and unsafe, lawless society,” he said.

“To top quality education and health service accessible to all citizens and residents, peace and harmonious society, connectivity of all hamlets villages, towns, cities and provinces through roads, bridges, ports, airports, electricity and digital communications.”

Marape urged Papua New Guineans to work together, “to rise and shine in our utmost belief for the best of this country”.
