Bougainville referendum Writ today

Writ for the Bougainville Referendum will be issued today.

The governor general, Sir Bob Dadae, will issue the writ at Government House, to the Chairman of the Bougainville Referendum Commission, Bertie Ahern at 10 o'clock this morning.

The issuing of the writ signals the start of the Bougainville Referendum.

The Autonomous region will go to the polls on November 23 to vote on the options of either independence from Papua New Guinea or greater autonomy.

The Bougainville Referendum Commission has registered up to 202,000 eligible voters to date.

The writ will be returned to the governor general on or before December 20, with results on the total number of votes in favour of the option of independence, the total number of votes in favour of the option of greater autonomy and the total number of informal votes.

The Bougainville Referendum Commission says there will be no winner or loser in the vote, and there is also no voter threshold to reach.

Results from the vote will have to be ratified by the National Parliament.
