Remote Islanders in PNG's Tewai-Siassi and Finschaffen face Food Shortage

Several island communities in the Tewai-Siassi, and Finschhafen districts of Morobe province, Papua New Guinea  are faced with food shortage following recent strong winds and high sea waves.

Over a thousand people on these islands are resorting to drinking water from wells and eating okari nuts, including garden crops that have not yet matured.

Adding to their plight is the lack of communication signals and the grounding of most of their dinghies, which are the main form of transportation to the mainland.

Assessment officers from the Provincial Disaster and Emergency Services have made assessments, collected data and interviewed local councilors and leaders, who are demanding further assistance from their respective District Development Authorities.
