PNG Prime Minister O'Neill to Advance UN Marine Resource Sustainability

Papua New Guinea  Prime Minister  Peter O’Neill   will join with the leaders of other Pacific Island nations  to advance regional interests ensuring the sustainable use of oceans and marine resources.
The Pacific Regional Preparatory High-Level Meeting for the United Nations Conference on Oceans will begin  in Suva, Fiji.

The Prime Minister said the aim of the meeting is to strengthen support for the Implementation of UN Sustainable Development Goal 14, which is to conserve and sustainably use oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.
“The livelihoods and economic development of our people in the Pacific depend on maintaining sustainable and healthy marine resources,” the Prime Minister said.
“Leaders from the Pacific will meet in Suva to discuss issues relating to the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 70/303.
“This calls for all UN members, including Papua New Guinea, to undertake measures for the sustainable use of oceans and seas so that we will have healthy marine environments for generations to come.
“The High-Level Meeting in Suva is to enable Pacific nations to discuss and reach consensus on a draft resolution and ‘Call for Action’ to be considered at the UN Conference of Oceans to be held later this year.
“As the largest Pacific Island state, Papua New Guinea stands with our neighbours, especially Small Island States, to have our voices heard when all UN members meet on oceans issues.
“Pacific nations have shown strong global leadership and played a leading advocacy role on oceans issues at the United Nations.
“Through the SAMOA Pathway, and other initiatives such as the Pacific Oceanscape, including the Framework of Pacific Regionalism, and we continue to maintain momentum.
“This High-Level Meeting is yet another opportunity to ensure that Pacific Island views on the sustainable use of oceans is high on the agenda leading up to the UN Oceans Conference later this year.”
