PNG PM to meet Pacific leaders on Sustainable use of Ocean resources

Prime Minister Peter O'Neill, will join other Pacific Island leaders in Fiji, to advance regional interests to ensure the sustainable use of oceans and marine resources.

The Pacific Regional Preparatory High-Level Meeting for the United Nations Conference on Oceans begins today in Suva.

The meeting is aimed at strengthening support for the implementation of the UN sustainable development goal 14, which is to conserve and sustainably use oceans, season marine resources for sustainable development.

Leaders from the Pacific will meet to discuss issues relating to the United Nations Assembly resolution 70, 303 which calls for all UN members including PNG, to undertake measures for sustainable use of oceans and seas, so that they have healthy ocean environments for generations to come.

Prime Minister O’Neill said the high level meeting will also enable Pacific nations discuss and reach consensus on a draft resolution and call for action to be considered at the UN conference of oceans, to be held later this year.
