PNG Lands Department to look into land lease on Samarai Island

The Member for Samarai Murua, Gordon Wesley is calling on the Lands Minister to forfeit any unused land on Samarai Island to the state for development purposes.
Mr. Wesley in Parliament this morning said most of the lands on the island are owned by an individual under a lease and most have not been developed yet to this date after they were acquired some 20 years ago. Mr. Wesley added that this has denied his development plans on the island, which includes a public servant housing project.
“This leaves no land to accommodate genuine investors or the growing need for public servant housing and other physical development on the island,” he said.
“Can the National and Provincial Land and Physical Planning Department forfeit all undeveloped land on the island back to the state,” asked the Member.
In response the Lands and Physical Planning Minister, Benny Allan assured the Member that the Department will look into this to find out the type of lease the land titles were given under. However, if the titles were given under a Free Hold Lease then the Department will have no say in this because they will not be forfeited to the state. PNGFM/ Photo: cleancruizing.com.au
