Digicel Cup to deliver school holiday program in Port Moresby

Digicel will hold its first Digicel Cup School Holiday Program session tomorrow at the National Football Stadium (NFS) in Port Moresby to promote health and well-being among local school children. This event will mark the start of this school program in its inaugural year. 

There will be 195 students from 10 schools in Port Moresby expected to participate in a variety of fun-filled activities including a special visit from the Port Moresby based Digicel Cup players as well as reps from the SP PNG Hunters. 

Stop N Shop Port Moresby Vipers, PRK Gulf Isapea and TNA Lions have field in three reps each to show their support for the program. PNG Hunters player volunteers include Nickson Borana, Ase Boas, Esau Siune, Benjamin Hetra, Atte Wabo Bina, Thompson Teteh, Butler Morris, Benjamin Hetra, Noel Zeming and Adex Wera. These volunteers will help teach valuable lessons to Grade Seven students aged between 13 and 14 years as part of the program. 

Digicel PNG CEO, Maurice McCarthy, said he was excited to welcome the PNG Hunters players to join in the program which aims to build a strong sense of community among young people in Port Moresby. 

“It is an honour to give back to the local community with the help of our local Digicel Cup players and SP PNG Hunters players who have voluntarily lent their time to offering young students their advice and knowledge,” he said. 

“The program is an opportunity for schools in the province to come together and for participating students to engage with each other, share ideas and establish new friendships which they would otherwise not have the chance to make.” 

The sports program will include five sessions throughout the day including warm up and Zumba, Health and Wellbeing, Basics of Rugby League, Motivational Talk, Team Building activities and a friendly game of touch football. 

Mr McCarthy said the sessions will show the students the importance of staying physically and mentally active through sports. 

“As part of living a healthy and active lifestyle, it is important for both girls and boys to keep their bodies and minds strong,” he said. 

“These sessions have been designed to empower youth to make well informed choices for their future in sports, health and education.” 

The Digicel Cup School Program will continue to run for the duration of the school holidays to instil positive life lessons to school children across the country. 

The Program will be rolled out in Lae and Kokopo on the 13th of July for both provinces. 

This will be followed by Goroka, Hagen, Jiwaka, Wabag and Mendi during the Term 3 School holiday in September. 

More than 1000 primary school students will be positively impacted by the program this year with a total of 44 schools participating and 20 students per school attending.
