Vehicle donation drives improved Correctional Services in Bougainville

The standards of prison operations in Bougainville are expected to increase following the donation of a transport vehicle to Correctional Services from the Australian Government last week.

The vehicle will be used to transport detainees between the Beikut Correctional Institution, police station and the courts. For more than six months, the prison has not had reliable access to secure transport for prisoners, causing delays and increasing risks of preventable escapes.

Commander of the Beikut Correctional Institution, Senior Inspector Jackson Gubag said the vehicle’s first showcasing in Buka was well received by local community members, who offered staff onboard drinks and snacks.

“The new truck increased pride in our warders, and the profile of Correctional Services here in Buka,” said Senior Inspector Gubag.

Australian High Commission Minister Counsellor Mr. Rod Hilton met with Senior Inspector Jackson Gubag at Beikut Correctional Institution to hand over the vehicle.

“Australia is pleased to donate this vehicle which will contribute to improved justice services in Bougainville,” Mr. Hilton said.

The PGK 196,000 investment is part of Australia’s commitment to strengthening law and justice service delivery in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville.
