Candidates contesting Bougainville Elections threatened

Candidates contesting in this year’s election are now on their campaign trails and according to reports received from the electoral office campaigns are progressing very well for most candidates.
However, it has been revealed that candidates contesting the Makis constituency seat in Buin, South Bougainville are being intimidated and threatened.
The assistant commissioner for police Paul Kamuai confirmed this and said his officers in Buin had to be called in to intervene when the candidates were being intimidated and threatened.
He added that the officers were able to talk to the parties involved before adding that the candidates themselves need to talk to each other so the election can progress well.
Police officers in Buin will still return and talk to the people in Makis constituency to ensure nothing spoils the election process.
Therefore, Mr. Kamuai is appealing to all Bougainvillean citizens to have the acknowledgement and respect for this election of ours saying we are all responsible in ensuring that all goes well and the election is conducted.
