Athlete Background Story:

21-year-old Nelson Stone is an athlete for track and field from Papua New Guinea. He competed in the men’s 400 metre race at the London 2012 Olympics.


This is Stones’ first Olympics and he thinks of it as a learning process. He also wants to make sure that he makes an impact.

“I’m not here just to make numbers … but to do something, something that’s going to be special.”

On the 31st of July 2012 Papua New Guinea Olympic Committee held a night to celebrate the Papua New Guinea Olympic Team. Stone enjoyed the event and had many highlights. “The best part was meeting many important people like the (PNG) commissioner … back home we aren’t able to meet them.”

On Saturday the first of August Stone competed in his 400 metre event. He finished the race only 0.01 seconds off his own personal best and the national record of 46.70.

He finished sixth in his heat, which included three of the top four overall places in the event. His time of 46.71 placed him 36th out of the 52 men competing.

Nelson Stone has shown what an incredible athlete he is and needs to be congratulated on his fantastic London 2012 Olympic result.
