Bishop Wade Secondary and Specialized Training Centre on the mainland, has suspended classes this week, following the killing of a grade 12 student, at the weekend.

The incident occurred, when the victim and two friends were walking to Kavex Village near the school, to see a friend and pick up a flash drive and a 20 Kina, when a stranger confronted them.

A fight ensued between the victim and the stranger, while his two friends ran away.

Police who arrived at the scene, rushed the badly beaten student to Buka General Hospital, but he died sometime later.

The dead student is from Kanauro village of Baubake Constituency in South Bougainville.

North Bougainville Police Regional Commander, Inspector Aili Spencer, described the killing as barbaric and appealed to families and relatives of the student, not to take the law into their own hands.

Inspector Spencer says police are now leading investigations, and suspects involved will be arrested soon. 

Meanwhile, the chiefs of Kanauro Village have met with police and have assured that they will not take the law into their hands, but assist police with the investigations.

They also appealed to the chiefs of Kavex village and leaders of Selau-Suir to come forward and assist police identify and surrender the suspects involved in the killing to see normalcy and peace in the community. 

Police have also reported that the nearby village of Kavex has been deserted. 

Villagers have run away due to security reasons. 

So far there has not been any retaliation from relatives of the deceased, as they have assured the school and community that the case is now with the police and the law will take its course.
