PNG to build modern town outside Port Moresby

THE proposed new town – Edai – will have facilities such as fire station, police station, market, hotel, medical centre, supermarket, school, church training centre and jogging tracks and other facilities.
Speaking at the launching of the multi-million town outside Port Moresby yesterday, Portion 11 chairman Madaha Maina said Edai would support the rapid growth of Port Moresby, the capital city.
He said the modern township would house Papua New Guineans in a secured and affordable environment with modern facilities.
“Shuttle bus services would be provided between Port Moresby and Edai Town.
“A solar farm would also provide clean, renewable energy.
“Our enviable wireless and internet connectivity is expected to deliver total convenience to residents,” Maina said.
Edai will rise on 155ha of land, of which Boera Holdings is the registered state lease holder.
According to Malaysian contractor JC-KRTA, 500 houses would be built at a cost of K250 million.
Boera Holdings chairman Sir Moi Avei said the PNG LNG project served as a seed and catalyst for development in the country.
He said Portion 11 was a sizeable land, which could allow for private sector development.
Avei said that land of this size represented an opportunity to employ a large local workforce during construction and continuing employment from the light industries and business houses.
Prime Minister Peter O’Neill praised Boera Holdings, saying for a landowner company to develop such township was not an easy task.
O’Neill said he was certain that with the project, demands by the growing population not only in the city but the country would be satisfied.
“PNG is a fast-growing nation, the economy is growing, population is also growing fast and creates a lot of demand for services including housing provision of power, water, sewerage and others, so such satellite township is good opportunity for landowners and their partners to meet demand.
“I congratulate the Boera landowners for surrendering the ownership of their land for such project,” O’Neill said.
