PNG Chiefs Reveal Logo and Jersey as Preparations Gather Pace for 2028 NRL Entry

With their entry into the NRL Telstra Premiership scheduled for 2028, the PNG Chiefs have unveiled the official logo and first supporter jersey that will identify the new club as it prepares to compete at the highest level of Australian rugby league.

The Port Moresby launch showcased a distinctly Papua New Guinean design, combining traditional symbols and contemporary artwork to create a club identity intended to represent the nation's people. The event brought together club representatives, the NRL and officials from the PNG and Australian governments.

At the centre of the logo is the figure of a chief, developed by a group of local graphic artists using cultural influences from across the country. The concept recognises the role of chiefs as leaders and custodians of their communities, while giving the club a symbol intended to unite a nation known for its remarkable linguistic and cultural diversity.

More than 800 languages are spoken in Papua New Guinea, and the club's emblem draws on traditions from the Highlands, Islands, Momase and Southern coastline.

The design combines four prominent cultural references, each carrying its own message. Five ceremonial feathers signify strength, beauty, status and pride, with the Southern Cross connecting the image to the national flag.

A cassowary bone reflects the courage and determination of traditional warriors. The chief's face, shaped to represent PNG, features red ceremonial paint to convey unity and a common purpose.

Kina shells form the fourth element, acknowledging traditional wealth, trade and prestige across the country's communities. Together, the symbols connect the club's identity with the heritage it aims to carry into professional rugby league.

Local artistic talent also features prominently in the supporter jersey, which incorporates cultural drawings by respected PNG artist TABU. The artwork gives the garment a connection to the country's creative traditions while establishing a recognisable look for supporters.

Chief executive officer Lorna McPherson said the unveiling represented a turning point after months of work to establish the club's public identity.

She said the emblem and jersey would give supporters a tangible connection to an organisation expected to carry the country's name into the NRL competition.

“The jersey of the PNG Chiefs is more than what players wear when they take to the field – it is a symbol of belonging, unity and the opportunity to represent millions of Papua New Guineans on the national stage,” McPherson said.

She said the club wanted to measure its contribution through the opportunities it created and the legacy it left, alongside its achievements on the field.

McPherson also thanked the staff and organisations involved in bringing the designs to life, saying the presentation was an important step towards establishing the club.

Chair Catherine Harris said the launch reflected a wider national ambition, with the identity designed to belong to supporters throughout PNG rather than only those directly involved with the team.

“In reflecting the culture, character and pride of the nation, this identity belongs to more than the club – it belongs to the people of Papua New Guinea,” Harris said.

She said preparations for the 2028 season would continue with a focus on building an organisation capable of operating successfully over the long term.

Kumuls stars and development players Gairo Voro, Morea Morea and Finley Glare took part in the presentation, modelling the new jersey as the club promoted its official merchandise range.

The supporter kit also carries the names of the PNG Chiefs' foundation commercial partners for 2028 and beyond. BSP is the principal partner, with PNG LNG, Coca-Cola, Nambawan Super, SP Lager, Struddys, Taylor Pacific, Toyota trading as Ela Motors and K92 Mining also included.

The club said supporters would be able to obtain the jersey through licensed retailers throughout PNG. International buyers, including those in Australia, will have online ordering options and access to selected retail outlets.

For the PNG Chiefs, the unveiling provides a public face for the team ahead of its planned entry into the NRL, with the club positioning its cultural identity as a central part of its connection to the country.

McPherson said the milestone was only the beginning of the club's journey.

“Today is the beginning of something truly special.”
