PNG Government Adds Two Vice Ministers Ahead Of 2027 Election

 Two MPs have been elevated to vice-ministerial positions in the PNG Government, with Usino-Bundi's Vincent Kumura and Porgera-Paiela's Gideon Maso Karipe formally sworn into office at Government House.

Their appointment comes less than a year before the 2027 national polls and gives both parliamentarians an opportunity to gain direct experience working within the ministerial system.

Governor-General Sir Bob Dadae administered the oaths during the ceremony, which was witnessed by Prime Minister James Marape and other senior members of the political leadership.

Mr Kumura will serve as Vice Minister Assisting the Prime Minister, while Mr Karipe has been given the petroleum portfolio as Vice Minister for Petroleum.

Mr Marape said the positions were created to address vacancies while also giving younger members of Parliament exposure to ministerial duties.

He said the Government's approach was in keeping with the Pangu-led administration's commitment made during the 2022 election to develop future leaders.

"They are both first-team members of the Parliament, and so we appointed them to give more strength, energy and power so that they can learn and build the confidence in the ministry space, so that in the next 10–20 years, this nation belongs to them," PM Marape said.

The Prime Minister said serving as a vice minister should not be viewed simply as an additional parliamentary title but as a period of preparation for greater responsibilities.

He said the two MPs would have the chance to learn the workings of their respective portfolios, work with senior ministers and develop a deeper understanding of government decision-making.

For Kumura, the new assignment will involve supporting the Prime Minister's office and responsibilities.

Karipe, meanwhile, will be involved in the petroleum sector, one of the country's major areas of economic and resource development.

Mr Marape called on both MPs to approach their new duties seriously and use the experience to build their capacity for future leadership.

He said vice-ministerial appointments could provide a pathway for parliamentarians to eventually assume full ministerial responsibilities.
