 The PNG Fire Service has received two new fire trucks with support from Australia, strengthening emergency response services in Lae and extending firefighting capability to Tari in Hela Province.

The two vehicles were formally handed over following cooperation between the Queensland Government, Australian High Commission and Australian Defence Force, with the equipment transported to PNG aboard the Royal Australian Navy’s Australian Defence Vessel (ADV) Reliant.

One of the trucks will remain in Lae to support the city’s firefighting operations, while the second will be deployed to Tari to help establish a permanent firefighting capability in the Hela provincial capital.

The delivery provides additional resources for firefighters responding to fires and other emergencies, while also supporting efforts to improve public safety in communities that require stronger emergency services.

ADV Reliant is operated by the Royal Australian Navy and serves as the Australian Government’s maritime humanitarian assistance and disaster response vessel.

The vessel is designed to transport heavy vehicles, equipment and humanitarian supplies across the region and has supported disaster response operations, regional engagement and capacity-building activities.

The arrival of the trucks is expected to improve the PNG Fire Service’s ability to respond to emergencies in Lae while giving Tari an important addition to its emergency response infrastructure.
