PNG Grade 12 students set for Written Expression examination

More than 41,000 Grade 12 students across PNG will sit the 2026 Written Expression Examination on Monday, August 3, with education authorities confirming all preparations have been completed for the nationwide assessment.

The Department of Education said 41,149 students from 249 secondary schools and seven National Schools of Excellence are expected to take part in the examination, which is one of the key national assessments for upper secondary students.

"This examination is a critical milestone for our Grade 12 students as they prepare for their future academic journeys," Dr. Kombra said

The department said examination papers and supporting materials have already been delivered to provinces and schools through its Measurement Services Division (MSD), allowing schools sufficient time to prepare ahead of the examination.

Students received their Written Expression resource booklets on Monday, July 27, giving them a full week to read the material, study the writing prompts and organise their ideas before sitting the examination.

Education Secretary Dr Uke Kombra acknowledged the work of the Measurement Services Division, Provincial Education Authorities and school leaders for ensuring the examination materials reached schools on schedule.

He said the Written Expression examination plays an important role in the academic pathway of Grade 12 students and encouraged candidates to make good use of the preparation period.

"This examination is a critical milestone for our Grade 12 students as they prepare for their future academic journeys," Dr. Kombra said.

"With the resource booklets now in their hands, I urge all students to utilize this week wisely, focus on their reading, and prepare thoroughly for Monday's exam."

Dr Kombra also wished all 41,149 students success in the examination.

"I extend my best wishes to all the 41,149 candidates across Papua New Guinea and encourage them to perform to the best of their abilities."
