Samoa measles death toll jumps to 32

The Samoa measles crisis death toll has jumped to 32.

This is seven more deaths than the update the Government had issued on Monday.


The figure was confirmed by the National Emergency Operation Centre(NEOC) in its latest update issued today.

Of all the deaths, 28 are children under the age of 4, one from the 10-14 years age bracket, two from the 15-19 years age bracket and one from the 30-39 years age bracket.

Some 234 new cases of measles were recorded during the past 24 hours.

 “The Ministry of Health confirms a total of 2,437 measles cases have been reported to the Disease Surveillance Team, since the outbreak started,” the update reads.

“To date, 32 measles related deaths have been recorded.”

There are currently 176 measles cases who are in-patients at all health facilities.  “Of this, 146 are at the Tupua Tamasese Meaole Hospital (TTMH), 5 at Poutasi District Hospital, 3 at Lalomanu District Hospital, 11 at the Leulumoega Rural District Hospital, 2 at the Malietoa Tanumafili II Hospital (MTIIH), 3 at Foailalo District Hospital, 2 at Sataua and 4 at Safotu District Hospital. 

“The total number of measles cases admitted to all hospitals recorded for the outbreak to date is 766.  Of that, 558 patients have been discharged,” NEOC said in a statement.
