Japanese Govt funded Alotau Market opens

The ceremony today at the new Alotau Market signifies the official hand-over of the Grant Component of the Alotau Town Market and Fisheries Facilities Project from the Government of Japan to the Government of Papua New Guinea through NFA.

The Grand Component of the project, which stands at K33 Million was funded by the people and Government of Japan through JICA has been completed and handed over to the Government of PNG through NFA as the Implementing Agency.

Managing Director of NFA, Mr John Kasu in his remarks said that the successful delivery of these Grant Components of the Project marks what is soon to be fully completed and commissioned modern market in the country.

He said that the “One stop Shop” Market Facility will take care of agriculture, tourism and fisheries sectors.

“The general objective of the market is to create a very safe and conducive environment where trading and exchange can take place to achieve the Government of the day’s call for empowering Papua New Guineans through income generation, food and livelihood security, and poverty alleviation.

“Let me assure you that we remain committed to delivering this project in the first quarter of year 2020.

“We envisage completion of the project by May 2020 and for a grand opening.

“National Fisheries Authority will continue to collaborate with relevant national government agencies, JICA and the Milne Bay Provincial Government to expedite the outstanding work that the Government of PNG needs to do so that the Project can be commissioned to benefit the whole population of Milne Bay Province,” said Mr Kasu.

Before concluding his remarks, he extended a special gratitude and thank you to H.E. the Ambassador of Japan, Mr Satoshi Nakajima for the support and cooperation rendered to accomplishing this milestone project.
