596 UXO’s demolished in Render Safe 19 operation in Western Province, Solomon Islands

Officers of the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team (EOD) together with Australian Defence Force personnel have so far demolished 596 UXO’s from 29 – 31 October under the Render Safe 19 operation currently underway in the Western Province.
Render Safe is an operation held every two years comprising of joint activity between the RSIPF and the Australian Defence Force to undertake the disposal of unexploded ordinance (UXO). New Zealand Defence Force personnel are also participating in the exercise this year.
The main area of operation this year is at Vonunu on Vella La Vella Island, Teme and Jack Harbour communities on Kolombangara, Baeroko on New Georgia Island, Boeboe and Niu Mala in the Vona Vona Lagoon, Noro and Munda.
So far, locations where demolitions have been conducted are Vonunu and Valapata in Vella La Vella, Teme and Jack Harbour in Kolombangara Island, Niu Mala and Tahitu in Kohinggo Island and Munda on New Georgia.
Provincial Police Commander Western Province, Chief Superintendent Mathias Lenialu says, “I would like to thank communities where demolitions have taken place so far for their support and understanding while we carry out our duties.”
“I would to also like to thank officers of the EOD and my own officers for the hard work and dedication as they carry out this very dangerous task.”
“The operation is still on going so I would like to call on communities who are yet to be visited to cooperate with the Police to ensure that our communities are safe from the UXOs.” 
The primary focus of the operation is to safely dispose of UXO items to ensure improved safety for local communities.
Operation Render Safe 19 will end on 9 November 2019.
