The Republic of China (ROC), Taiwan remains a close friend and an important bilateral partner of Solomon Islands.

This statement was made by Jeremiah Manele, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade (MFAET) when speaking at a welcome reception for Taiwan’s naval flagship “Pan Shi” on Tuesday, in Honiara

Whilst complimenting the goodwill visit made by one of Taiwan’s largest naval flagships, he also took the opportunity to acknowledge the Solomon Islands and Taiwan relations.

“Allow me to reaffirm my strong confidence in the mutually beneficial relationship enjoyed by our two countries and peoples. On behalf of the government and people of Solomon Islands, let me also register our appreciation for Republic of China’s commitment towards our country’s development path,” said Manele.

He said diplomatic relations between the two countries has grown over the last 35 years and that Taiwan remains a close friend and important bilateral partner of Solomon Islands.

“The presence of the naval fleet today signifies the depth of that friendship between our two nations,” said Manele.

He said that Solomon Islands like the Republic of China is a maritime country, thus are both fishing nations.

In this regard, Manele said they would like to invite Republic of China to establish fish processing on-shore plants in the country.

“The experience Republic of China has gone through is admirable, Solomon Islands has a lot to learn from its partner,” he said.
