UN Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights visit Fiji
The UN Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights, Kate Gilmore, will begin an official visit to Fiji today to discuss the human rights situation in the country with authorities, human rights defenders, representatives of civil society, U.N Agencies and the international community.
In Suva, the Deputy High Commissioner will meet with the President, the Attorney General, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Speaker of Parliament, the Chief Justice and the Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission (NHRI).
During her visit, Gilmore will visit the capital Suva where she will hold extensive talks with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights Regional Office for the Pacific, the United Nations Resident-Coordinator and members of the United Nations Country Team.
Gilmore will also convene meetings with human rights defenders, environmentalists, members of the vulnerable groups and other civil society representatives. The Deputy High Commissioner will also meet with heads of partner, regional organisations and representatives of the international community and the diplomatic corps.
The OHCHR Regional Office for the Pacific was established in Suva, Fiji in August 2005. The Regional office is mandated to cover 16 countries, these include: Australia, Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, New Zealand, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Republic of the Marshall Islands, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu.
