PNG Attorney General directed to amend Organic Law
Papua New Guinea Attorney -General and Minister for Justice Alfred Manase says he has been directed by Prime Minister Peter O’Neill to make important constitutional amendments to the Organic Law.
Manase said amendments were to be done on the powers of decentralisation – or greater powers to be given to the provincial governments.
“We want to seriously look at what powers are transferred to the provinces while the national departments perform supervisory roles,” Manase said.
“There is a huge task ahead that needed to be done in consultation with the Department of Provincial Affairs.”
He will also look into the Organic Law on the Integrity of Political Parties and Candidates for stability purposes after the Supreme Court had nullified some of the provisions.
Manase will also look into the Public Service Management Act and the powers of appointment.
Manase said the department would also be looking at some strategic projects to protect and strengthen the rule of law and refocusing its position to give greater attention to crime reduction.
He said the department was also looking at revitalising and strengthening the work of the village court system to allow them to deliver justice and maintain peace at the ward level.
“I’m encouraging all government agencies to maintain the relations and make the department as the first point of advice as Government’s chief legal adviser and defender of human rights,” Manase said.
