Australian govt gives new patrol boats to PNG

The Australian federal government has handed over the first Guardian class patrol boat to Papua New Guinea.

Twenty-one boats will be gifted to 12 Pacific Island countries during the next five years, replacing the previous vessels that were rolled out in the 10 years from 1987.

Defence Minister Christopher Pyne has hailed the new boats as a boost to security in the Pacific region.

“The new vessels replace the current Pacific patrol boats, operated by 12 participating nations, and will provide each nation with enhanced abilities to conduct maritime surveillance and law enforcement operations,” Pyne said.

The first boat, named Ted Diro, is named after the first Commander of the PNG Defence Force following PNG gaining independence.

“Australian shipbuilders are using Aussie steel and know how to build the new Guardian class patrol boats, helping to keep our region safe and secure,” Defence Industry Minister Steven Ciobo said.
