PNG Statistical Office facing many challenges

The are many challenges facing the National Statistical Office (NSO) despite it being a fundamental government agency.

Data collection officers from the provinces who face the many challenges on a daily basis, were reminded again of their challenges by National Statistician, Roko Koloma, when officiating at the second Price Statistics Refresher workshop in Lae.

One of the main challenges facing the National Statistical Office is its limited trained officers when compared against the ever increasing national population and also their poor presence in the provinces with only eight functioning offices.

National Statistician, Roko Koloma, highlight these as some of the main challenges apart from limited funding and resources from the government.

Apart from that there is also need for the different government departments and agencies to have their own statisticians too and idealy for them to share, analyse and compare collected data as good government decisions are made on quality data.

Mr Koloma also highlighted that their work has a direct effect on the calculation of the Consumer Price Index and also the Gross Domestic Product of the country.

The National Statistician said their increased presence in the provinces will lead to improved macro-economics as their work will lead to each provinces developing its own measurement of price movements on basic items or Consumer Price Indexes (CPI).
