Four Games kick off today prior to games opening

Port Moresby, July 2 – The Port Moresby 2015 Pacific Games action will begin on Friday, one day before the opening ceremony, with four sports getting under way on the Games’ unofficial start day.
Basketball, table tennis and touch will begin at 09:00, while the first soccer match of Port Moresby 2015 will start at 10:00.
There will be four games played in basketball on the first day on competition at BSP Arena.
In pool A, 2011 silver medallist Guam is pitched against bronze medallist Tahiti. In pool B, Papua New Guinea will take on defending champion New Caledonia.
At the Caritas Technical Secondary School, table tennis will feature six women’s matches and eight men’s matches across the day.
Tahiti and New Caledonia will be the main contenders as they vie for gold in men’s singles and doubles, women’s singles and doubles and mixed doubles.
Touch will get off to a running start with its round robin competition at Bisini Grounds.
On the women’s side there are five PGAs competing, with two matches on day one. There are seven PGAs competing on the men’s side, with six matches going ahead on Friday.
On the first of 12 days of soccer, eight teams will take to the field in four matches in the A and B pool at Bisini Grounds.
Pool B will see defending champion New Caledonia take on host Papua New Guinea, while Solomon Islands – silver medallist at the last Games – face New Zealand.
Port Moresby 2015 will be the first time since the Games began in 1963 that New Zealand and Australia are taking part.
