Japan , Papua New Guinea enter into comprehensive partnership

JAPAN and Papua New Guinea have entered into a comprehensive partnership dedicated to stability and prosperity in the region.
This is more so in the areas of cooperation in economic fields, although cooperation for sustainable development, people-to-people exchanges, recovery of remains of war dead, and regional and global cooperation also come into play.
Prime ministers Shinzo Abe and Peter O’Neill announced the partnership in a joint statement after they had a summit meeting last Thursday night.
They reaffirmed the traditionally-friendly and cooperative relationship between the two countries, especially that next year will mark the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and PNG.
The two leaders shared the intention to develop such long-standing friendly and cooperative relationship into the “Comprehensive Partnership for Regional Stability and Prosperity”, and expressed their determination to play a leading role in ensuring stability and prosperity in the Pacific region.
They stressed the importance of securing stable and competitive energy supply.
Both leaders welcomed the fact that exports of LNG from PNG to Japan started this June, referring to it as “a positive contribution to Papua New Guinea’s economic growth and to Japan’s energy security as it helps diversify supply sources”.
“Fully recognising the great potential in Papua New Guinea as an investment destination for Japan, the two leaders reaffirmed the importance of enhancing more investment by Japanese companies in Papua New Guinea,” the joint statement added.
