PNGSDP RELEASES ASSETS

The PNG Sustainable Development Program has released some of its valuable assets to the people of Western Province.
Chairman and Former Prime Minister Sir Mekere Morauta announced yesterday that this will enable the projects to continue as it was impossible for P-N-G-S-D-P to manage.

Sir Mekere said the decision to give shares to the people was always the view of his then government when it passed the Ok Tedi Mine Continuation Ninth Supplemental Agreement Act in 2001.

The idea was for all people to have a big say in how the income from Ok Tedi should be spent.

He says unfortunately due to the circumstances beyond PNGSDP's control, that never happened.

This will now change all that with the people affected by mining impacts now have a big say in decisions that have a profound impact on their lives.

The OTDF was created by Ok Tedi Mine to help implement and manage community development benefits from the mine. Its serves more than 100 thousand people, about half of Western Province population in 156 villages down river.

Sir Mekere says there is enough income from Ok Tedi mine to finish these projects as well as all others that P- N- G-S-D-P were forced to halt.

He further says he looks forward to watching these projects continue to grow and benefit the province.
