PNG gets more funds from Global Fund to treat tuberculosis

Minister for Health. Mr Malabag
Papua New Guinea is getting more funding from Global Fund to treat tuberculosis patients.

Minister for Health, Michael Malabag, told Parliament during Question Time yesterday, Global Fund is giving a grant of about 29 million Kina towards PNG's fight against TB.

"The Government has allocated 9-million together with the bridging funding from the Global Fund. We have been touch with them recently. Their representative came to Papua New Guinea just two months ago and we have written an agreement on that and the Global Fund will also put 13 million US dollars. And that is for us, we are counterparts in WHO to continue to sustain the continuity of the programs that is happening right now and the TB grants from the Global Fund."

Mr Malabag says the Government is also subsidizing treatment of TB in the country.

He further appealed to people diagnosed with TB to be faithful to taking their medication, so as not to develop resistance to the medication.

Northern Governor, Gary Juffa, had raised the issue in Parliament after the death of a woman in an Australian hospital from TB. NBC
