PNG Mt Hagen Airport Runway Reduced To 980 Metres As Upgrade Enters Critical Stage

MT HAGEN: Aircraft operations at Mt Hagen Airport have been further restricted after the available runway length was reduced to 980 metres as major resurfacing works move into the central section of the runway.

The National Airports Corporation (NAC) said the reduced runway length means the airport can currently accommodate only Dash 8 or similar-sized aircraft while the asphalt overlay and associated construction works continue.

The latest phase of the project is expected to be completed by October 15, 2026, allowing construction teams to progress with the next stages of the airport upgrade.

NAC said the temporary restrictions were necessary to allow the major works to proceed safely and efficiently.

The corporation acknowledged the inconvenience being experienced by passengers, airlines and other airport users during the construction period.

The completed project is expected to provide Mt Hagen with a stronger and upgraded runway capable of accommodating larger aircraft, including the Airbus A220 and Boeing 737, by December 2026.

Passengers with urgent travel requirements have been advised to consider Goroka and Nadzab airports as alternative travel points while the works continue.

NAC thanked passengers, airlines and other stakeholders for their patience and understanding during the temporary restrictions.
