CAR THEFT ON THE RISE IN HAGEN

A ten seater vehicle owned by Oilmin Mining and Explorations company based in Mt Hagen was hijacked and driven away at Kimil 1, right at the border of Dei District in Western Highlands Province and Jiwaka (back road leading to Jiwaka) yesterday.
Western Highlands Provincial Police Commander Chief Superintendent Martin Lakari said police on duty that night managed to track down and retrieve the stolen vehicle with the driver at Kinsley Valley in Jiwaka Province when the robbers were about to remove the parts of the vehicle.
Lakari confirmed that the Keluwa back road to Kagamuga Airport is safe and people residing there are not linked to the incident.
He said the robbers are believed to be from Warakum area in Mt Hagen Central. PPC Lakari said the robbers did that due to grievances with the exploration company over employment and police are working around the clock to arrest the suspects involved.
PPC Lakari said the vehicle has been given back to Oilmin Company and police are working on arresting the suspects. However, police have confirmed vehicle theft in the town has become increasingly common in past few weeks in Mt Hagen and organizations, private vehicle owners have been urged to always take precautions when driving after hours in hot spot areas identified as Mt Hagen Market leading down to Warakum, Airport back road, Night clubs and front of alcohol shops and town areas especially in Rainbow.
