Tongan PM Akilisi Pohiva survives no- confidence vote

Tongan Prime Minister Akilisi Pohiva has resoundingly survived a vote of no- confidence in the national parliament today.

Parliament rejected the motion for a vote of no confidence on PM Pohiva with votes of 14-10.

Against the motion were ‘Akilsi Pohiva, Lord Ma’afu, Hon. Siaosi Sovaleni, ‘Aisake Eke,  Saia Piukala, Pohiva Tu’i’onetoa,  Poasi Tei,  Penisimani Fifita,  Vuna Fa’otusia,  Tevita Lavemaau,  Semisi Sika, Matei Tapueluelu, Light of Day Taka and ‘Akosita Lavulavu.

For the motion were, Lord Tu’ilakepa, Lord Nuku, Lord Tu’I’afitu, Lord Tu’iha’ateiho, Lord Tu’iha’angana, Lord Fusitu’a, Lord Vaea, Fe’ao Vakata, Samiu Vaipulu and Vili Hingano.

The opposition has brought the motion against Pohiva, saying he has to be removed over list of 17 abuses of office as well as mismanagement of the economy.

Pohiva rejected the claims saying he has nothing to hide and all allegations against him and his government had been dealt with appropriately.

Pohiva the first commoner elected to lead the country has been prime minister for just over two years.
