Deported Iranian Refugee applies for bail

IRANIAN refugee Loghman Sawari, who got deported from Fiji appeared briefly at the Boroko District Court yesterday with his lawyer to apply for bail.

Loani Heano, lawyer defending the 21-year old from Iran who allegedly falsified information to obtain travel documents. This includesbirth registration card and PNG passport, which enabled him to travel to Fiji two weeks ago.

Fiji deported this person back to PNG on the basis that his passport was invalid, as was their right. Immigration officials and police detained him for five hours at Jackson’s Airport and later charged him with giving false information for falsifying information to obtain a birth certificate and a passport.

This week, Loghman was also taken to a private hospital in Port Moresby for medical treatment of dehydration, trauma and other mental issues.

The young man who worked in Lae before heading back to Manus and then onto Fiji was brought to court yesterday to apply for bail, but did not eventuate because there was a problem with the lodgement.

The matter was adjourned.

While this is happening, immigration and other agencies are investigation the whole issue including the agent that assisted him in obtaining the PNG passport. Post Courier/ ONEPNG
