Workshop held for Torres Strait Fisheries Representatives

The Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA) recently engaged Professor Alistair McIlgorm from the Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources and Security (ANCORS) to run a two day workshop on Fisheries Management Principles.
The workshop, run for the Torres Strait Fisheries representatives, focussed on the Protected Zone Joint Authority (PZJA) consultative forums and covered a wide range of topics from the legislative framework of the PZJA, to stock assessments and fisheries management tools used around the world.
The workshop is designed to support Advisory Committee and Working Group representatives in their role and bring together their own knowledge of fisheries with western principles of fisheries management.
Advisory Committees and Working Groups provide advice to the PZJA on the management of Torres Strait fisheries.
The TSRA Fisheries Portfolio Member, Mr Kenny Bedford reiterated the need for strong and informed Torres Strait representation in the PZJA.
“The PZJA has acknowledged and supported our aspiration of 100 per cent ownership of Torres Strait commercial fisheries,” Mr Bedford said.
“We have to continue to build on the capacity of our community members to increasingly engage in the management of our fisheries, and this training is a step in the right direction.”
The workshop was conducted as a pilot project and its success may see regular workshops directed at further equipping Torres Strait representatives to effectively engage in the fisheries management processes as members of PZJA committees.
