PNG Lewas help EAP to secure maiden ACCC title

Six (6) PNG Lewas players helped the International Cricket Council (ICC) East Asia Pacific (EAP) Team win the inaugural Australian Women’s Country Cricket Championships in Mt Gambier, South Australia last month.
PNG Lewas’ Captain Norma Ovasuru, Helen Buruka, Kaia Arua, Pauke Siaka, Ravini Oa and Tanya Ruma were all selected to represent the ICC EAP Team, along with players from Vanuatu, Samoa and Japan.
The EAP qualified for the final against South Australia after losing only one (1) match in the round-robin stage of the tournament. Led by Ovasuru, the EAP Team restricted South Australia to 95 off their allotted 17 overs in the final, with Siaka leading the way taking 3/9. In reply, EAP coasted to victory by eight (8) wickets with PNG Lewas, Ruma (41 off 47 balls) and Ovasuru (32 off 33 balls) leading the way with the bat.
“It was a really good experience, with all the players from different countries in the EAP coming together as one team,” said Ovasuru.
“It means a lot to all the Lewas who was selected in the team. We learnt a lot from this with all the players playing at a very good standard. Although we only came together a couple of days before the tournament, it felt like we had played together for a long time. We had a good team spirit,” said Ovasuru.
It was fitting that Ovasuru hit the winning runs in final after finishing the tournament as the second highest run scorer and the most economical bowler. Her efforts were awarded with selection as the captain of the Australian Country Women’s XI.
