PNGRFL Women pay tribute to first women Rugby League Players

It was a case of past meets present as the Women’s Division of PNGRFL in continuing its launch for the World Cup Campaign paid tribute yesterday to history of Rugby League in POM by honouring the first Women Rugby League players from the Port Moresby circuit from a by gone era.
A few local women who played for legendary teams like Porebada DCA, Hanuabada Hawks, and Magani were honoured and recognised by the PNGRFL Women’s division for their role, their initiative and courage in being the first to grace the Rugby league fields in a male dominated sport in Port Moresby during the mid seventies.
In a touching display and mark of respect from the current PNG Raggianna players these legendary women who hung up their boots 40 years ago where presented with signed Rugby league memorabilia by the current female players with the words thank you on it as a token of their appreciation to these older women for the development of the game in PNG.
PNG Women in League Founder and National Women’s Coordinator Wendy Kohun said “You cannot go forward without knowing your roots, and history is very important to the success of PNG Women in League so by going back to where it all began instils pride and tradition to the young current PNG Regiaana’s”.
According to Mrs Kohun they will also feature Goroka women in League and Lae as part of the way forward toward the 2018 Rugby League World Cup.
