TEAM FIJI EYES GOLD

“Our biggest competitors will be the New Caledonians who are the 2011 South Pacific Games defending champions but of course we are also looking out for tem PNG, who have home ground advantage.” That was the declaration from the Team Fiji Chef de Mission Cathy Wong, upon arrival last night.
The team Fiji contingent to the 15th Pacific Games is a 453 strong team, of which the first contingent arrived last night.
About 226 athletes participating in the codes of swimming, and soccer are here for the first lot of events, with the second contingent to arrive on the 7th to the 14th.
Chef de Mission Cathy Wong told NauFM News that team Fiji were set to compete in 26 sports of the 28 sporting codes.
“We do have a fairly young team this time around but we are confident of our abilities to take back gold for our country.”
Ms Wong added that the gold medal hopes for team Fiji included athletics, weightlifting, karate and of course rugby 7’s.
“Some surprises to look out for are our basketball team who have been doing quite well in their events and preparations to this lead up”
