PNG GOVERNMENT TO RE-OPEN AROPA AIRPORT IN BOUGAINVILLE

Civil Aviation Minister Davis Steven says, the National Government is serious in restoring the de-commissioned Aropa Airport in Central Bougainville.

Minister Steven says Aropa Airport remains an important Government project, and that there is funding available to reopen the airport.

Mr. Steven challenged landowners and leaders of Bougainville to sort out land issues and allow work to start.

He says technical work in getting Aropa restored has been on-going since 2007.

"We are giving Bougainville priority, important priority at this hour.Aropa, to us, is very strategic, very important economic link between the entire island of Bougainville and its economy," Minister Steven said.

Last week a technical team of engineers from Civil Aviation and Safety Authority were in Arawa to inspect the Aropa Airport.

Mr. Steven says transport services are an enabling sector that compliments business activities to grow.

Minister Steven revealed the Government's intention, in a recent visit to Bougainville.
